Nancy Drew 18: The Phantom of Venice Hints

How do I open the Chinese puzzle box?

  • 1 of 11: The morning after Nancy has a nighttime visitor (which happens after you get in contact with Gina) --
  • 2 of 11: -- you'll come out to the main room to discover that Colin has acquired a new toy. If you ask him about it, he says he'd rather you didn't try to open it. So you'll have to wait till he leaves.
  • 3 of 11: After you return from giving the gem to Enrico --
  • 4 of 11: -- you'll find a note on your pillow from Colin saying goodbye and giving the puzzle box to you. I feel kind of bad for Colin, but at least we have access to the box now.
  • 5 of 11: Pick it up and give it a shake to make a little lid pop up and reveal a set of nine buttons with Chinese characters on them. And by this point in the game, you know where to go when you need to translate something, right?
  • 6 of 11: Go to the news kiosk in Piazzo San Marco and buy a Chinese-English book for 5 euros. This time, however, you can't click the book on the characters; instead, you'll have to just keep comparing the pictures until you figure them all out. If you're having trouble, here are the translations:
  • 7 of 11: Hmm, not that helpful. What order should we push the buttons in? Well, did you notice the pictures and characters on the outside of the box?
  • 8 of 11: Put the box down and pick it up again, and this time move the arrow to the left, then click to turn it around. Each picture has a character next to it that translates to a number. Can you see where this is going?
  • 9 of 11: The character that means the number one is on a picture of a tree. That means the first button to push on the top is the one with the character that translates to "wood."
  • 10 of 11: Number two is the mountain, number three is fire, and number four is ocean waves (or water). So check back on the translation, then click on the buttons in that order --
  • 11 of 11: -- Wood, Mountain, Fire, Water.
