Nancy Drew: The Haunting of Castle Malloy Hints
What do I do with the tall stones with the constellations?
of 12: These are located on the far side of the wall, at the lower right side of the field.
of 12: This is a complicated puzzle. You won't be able to solve it until you've found two books: "The Zodiac Constellations," which is on the left shelf of the library when the game starts, and "The Ancient Celtic Sabbats," a book about Ogham runes that you can get from Donal (for a price, as usual).
of 12: Read all the way to the bottom of this hint for the correct settings for the stones, but they won't work until you have both books.
of 12: Now. If you look closely at the first stone, you can see that it has three parts: a constellation, on the top; a tree that's recognizably in one of the four seasons, in the middle; and an Ogham rune, at the bottom.
of 12: The stones turn, so with a little work, you can turn them so that the rune, the tree, and the constellation all show the same time of year. For example:
of 12: According to the Sabbats book, Samhain occurs on November 1 and represents winter. According to the constellation book (and we're going by the "astrological" dates, not the "constellation" dates), the constellation on November 1 is Scorpio. So the Samhain rune should have the bare tree in winter and the constellation shaped like a tiny triangle with a long tail.
of 12: As you can probably guess, you need to figure out what each constellation is, what season each tree picture represents, and what each rune means. You don't need to translate the entire Ogham word, though; there are only four words here, and each one starts with a different letter, so you only need to figure out the one on the bottom.
of 12: Once you've done that, the next step is to decide which season goes on which of the four stones. There's a clue to that in the sky, and also in the date of the wedding.
of 12: The wedding is on June 1; that means it's summer. And if you zoom in on the first stone, the one with the odd stone at its base, you can even see Taurus in the sky at the left. Cool!
of 12: So set the first stone to Beltaine, Summer (the tree has full leaves), and Taurus. Then turn to the right and set that stone for fall. Can you do the rest yourself?
of 12: Yes, I agree; it's a royal pain. Here are the settings for all four stones:
