Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships Hints

How do I get the golf cart working?

  • 1 of 10: There's a note on the golf cart that tells you the problem: the batteries need to be filled with distilled water before you can drive it without blowing up.
  • 2 of 10: Once you have the water dispenser, lift the seat of the cart and put it on the batteries. You now have to fill each battery to 100 mL with water. Read to the very end of this hint for step-by-step instructions on how to do this.
  • 3 of 10: The battery array is a little confusing at first. The blue boxes are the batteries; each one has a digital readout on it showing how much water it has at the moment.
  • 4 of 10: Each battery also has a red and black switch on it that determines whether that battery is open to receive water. When the switch is a vertical line (|) it's off, and when it's a vertical line (--) it's on.
  • 5 of 10: The water dispenser is the odd flower-shaped arrangement at the bottom. Each of the flower petals is a container of water; pressing on the petal dispenses the water into any open batteries. Pressing the red button at the center of the flower sucks all the water back out to reset the puzzle.
  • 6 of 10: You can open any of the batteries you want, but the amount of water dispensed is always the same -- 60 mL, which is divided between any open batteries. If you only have one battery open, it gets all 60 mL; if you have two open, they each get 30; three get 20; four get 15; and six get 10. See?
  • 7 of 10: All right, so let's see how this works in practice. When you start with the cart as a junior detective, two batteries are full (100 mL), so you can leave them turned off. If you open the other four batteries and press a water petal, each gets 15 mL. That makes the totals 100, 100, 60, 30, 40, and 30.
  • 8 of 10: If you now close all of them but the one that needs 40 and press another water petal, it gets all 60 mL and goes to 100 mL, so it's done. See how this works?
  • 9 of 10: If you still don't get it or just can't be bothered, here are the solutions:
  • 10 of 10: Once you've done this, you'll never have to fuss with it again.
