Why isn't the furnace turned on in the middle of a blizzard?
Um ... good question.
I suppose it's possible that this is an old furnace that doesn't work anymore and the school uses some other device to heat the school. Let's say that's the reason, shall we? I'm sure the fact that the puzzle doesn't work if the furnace is roaring with fire is pure coincidence.
