How do I arrange the fuses for Chase?

  • 1 of 7: Chase, the mechanic out in the barn, wants you to help him arrange fuses in the car he's working on. Yikes! Read to the end of this hint for the arrangement he needs.
  • 2 of 7: What you're trying to do, as Chase said, is arrange the fuses so none of the numbers touches any other number in sequence. That is, 1 can't touch 2, 2 can't touch 1 or 3, 3 can't touch 2 or 4, and so on.
  • 3 of 7: Notice the odd arrangement of the fuse array. The top and bottom slots each touch three other slots; the side slots touch four other slots; the ones in the middle touch six slots.
  • 4 of 7: So it makes sense to put the two numbers at the beginning and end of the sequence, 1 and 8, in the middle slots, since they have fewer numbers to avoid.
  • 5 of 7: We can then put 2 and 7, which 1 and 8 need to avoid, in those top and bottom slots -- the 2 in the slot farthest from the 1, and the 7 in the slot farthest from the 8.
  • 6 of 7: Leave those in place and see if you can maneuver the 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the side slots.
