Nancy Drew 22: Trail of the Twister Hints
How do I fix the transmission for Chase?
of 11: This is a complicated puzzle, or maybe I just think so because I know so little about cars. Read to the end of this hint for a picture of how it should look in the end and step-by-step directions on how to get it looking that way.
of 11: There are two basic rules here. First, every gear but one has to mesh with gears on at least one other rod, and some with both rods.
of 11: Secondly, the rods are very close to each other, so the order in which you put the gears on the rods is important. You need to have enough room to get a gear into its place; you can't fold a steel gear to make it slip past a larger gear on another rod.
of 11: So you might want to start by finding out which gears combine. In the Junior puzzle, some of the gears are already in place, and you can see that the green gear and the brown gear go together perfectly --
of 11: -- when one is on the second rod and one on the third rod. You may not have noticed, but the rods are not equal distances apart; the first and second rods are farther apart than the second and third rods. So a brown gear on the first rod and a green gear on the second rod wouldn't touch.
of 11: Another thing you might not have noticed is that there's one slot on the first rod that will reach down to the third rod. That's the only place the biggest gear, the yellow one, can go, and it will mesh with the teal gear on the third rod.
of 11: You can check the array at any time by pushing the button on the left with a gear and an arrow on it. This will turn the rods to show you which gears are meshing and which aren't.
of 11: Here is the final array that the gears will need to go in:
of 11: However, knowing that will only get you so far, because you have to assemble the gears in a certain order. The gears farthest from the open end have to go on first, and they can't go on if there are larger gears on the adjoining rods. If you try, either the gear just doesn't stay in place or Nancy says, "That won't work. The gears will overlap."
of 11: If you're totally stuck, here is the order of assembly:
