Nancy Drew 22: Trail of the Twister Hints

How do I find out where Scott went?

  • 1 of 19: This is going to be fairly complicated. Read to the end of this hint for directions on finding Scott.
  • 2 of 19: Let's start with the obvious and go look around his desk. It all looks pretty much the same as it did -- but what's that sticking out of the locked drawer?
  • 3 of 19: You still have the key, so unlock the drawer to find --
  • 4 of 19: -- a really incriminating note from Brooke, with some really confusing notes from Scott scribbled on the bottom. What does he mean by "Review surface charts"?
  • 5 of 19: You might not have noticed, but there's a white binder in the basement on the bookshelf behind Frosty labeled "Surface Charts." Go take a look.
  • 6 of 19: It's a record of the weather on every day for the last three months. How does that help us?
  • 7 of 19: Scott's note refers to two specific weather conditions, and then says, "Find dates." So perhaps we need to start looking for those weather conditions. But the chart is a little confusing; under the "Weather" column, it just has symbols, no words. We need a way to translate those symbols. (And Debbie's filing is no help; she uses the same symbols, but not to mean weather conditions.)
  • 8 of 19: Another thing you might not have noticed down in the basement is a piece of paper that translates those symbols. You can find it under the washtub sink, to the left of the laptop you've been using.
  • 9 of 19: Okay, now we're cooking with gas. The two conditions you're looking for are:
-- Dewpoint of 45 degrees or higher and constant moderate rain (three black dots), OR
-- Temperature of 85 degrees or higher with either light hail no thunder (two triangles with no line), or severe thunderstorm with hail (three-bend lightning jag with a white triangle on top).
  • 10 of 19: Once you're sure of those symbols, go back through the Surface Charts and find every date with those conditions for the past three months.
  • 11 of 19: You should find a total of 12 dates -- 5 in March, 5 in April, and 2 in May.
  • 12 of 19: You've probably figured out the next step -- go back up to Scott's office and look up those dates on the wall calendar behind the desk.
  • 13 of 19: When you click on the calendar, you'll notice that Nancy pulls out a piece of paper with 12 blank lines for you to type in the letters and numbers of the dates you just looked up. Flip back to March, click on the first blank line, and start typing.
  • 14 of 19: When you're done, grab the piece of paper. If you have the right numbers and letters, the writing will change to Nancy's handwriting in blue ink. Here's what you should have:
  • 15 of 19: But the letters and numbers don't seem to be making words, just gibberish. What now?
  • 16 of 19: You've seen something like those letter-number combinations before, most likely. Do you remember where?
  • 17 of 19: Frosty's photos on the laptop (click on the Gallery icon) all have designations like that. Flip through the photos till Nancy makes a comment.
  • 18 of 19: When you find all three photos, you'll know where Scott went. Grab the last remaining car and head out for --
  • 19 of 19: -- the Windmill. (But you won't find him there until you've gone through the ENTIRE process I just outlined -- read the note in the desk, deciphered the dates, and looked at the photos.)
