Nancy Drew 23: Shadow at the Water's Edge Hints

How do I solve the sudokus?

  • 1 of 8: If you haven't solved a sudoku, you're in for a treat. The game doesn't give much in the way of instruction; I suppose they assume everyone's done sudokus before.
  • 2 of 8: The general goal is to fill in all the blanks with the digits 1 through 9. In every row, column, and 3x3 box, each number occurs only once. In each 9x9 puzzle, each digit will occur 9 times. Make sense so far?
  • 3 of 8: Okay, well, just start messing with it and you'll see how it works. In any event, here are some helpful strategies I use when I do a sudoku puzzle.
  • 4 of 8: -- Take it one number at a time. Look for the 1s in a row of three boxes; if two of them are there, see if the third one might be in an easy spot. After you've either placed or found you can't yet place all the 1s, start on the 2s. Go through to 9 like this, then start over.
  • 5 of 8: -- When you've gone through all the rows/columns like that, go back and look for rows, columns, or boxes that are missing only one number. If you find all the numbers but 3, the missing number MUST be 3.
  • 6 of 8: -- Also look for rows/columns/boxes missing two numbers. If the 6 and the 9 are missing and one of the spaces can't be a 6, the other one MUST be.
  • 7 of 8: -- When you've placed all nine of a number, that number goes dark on the left. That doesn't mean they're all in the right position; it just means there's nine of them.
  • 8 of 8: -- If all the spaces are filled in and Nancy doesn't tell you it's done, something's in the wrong place. Try looking at each row and column separately and counting to make sure you have only one of each number. When you find a duplication, you know where the problem is.
