Nancy Drew 23: Shadow at the Water's Edge Hints
How do I get this envelope open?
of 9: There have been several hints to this in the game. Remember how Rentaro said he was going to fix the torn paper screen in your room?
of 9: He said all he had to do was use some steam to loosen the glue, then stick the paper back down.
of 9: That's right, we're going to use the old technique beloved of mystery writers in the 1930s --
of 9: -- we're going to hold the envelope in a plume of steam and unstick it that way, so that we can then restick it afterwards and no one will know we peeked.
of 9: So first you need a source of steam. How about a tea kettle?
of 9: You know where one is, if you did Takae's third lesson on the tea ceremony. All you need to do is find a way to get into Room 18 when she's not there.
of 9: The kettle is already full of water (improbably), so you don't need to fill it. All you need is a source of heat.
of 9: The firepit in the lobby is still pretty hot, even though the fire's out. Hang the tea kettle on the fish-shaped hook above it and wait.
of 9: When the kettle is whistling (another improbable thing, since Japanese kettles don't usually have whistles on them), hold the envelope in the steam. Look at the contents of the envelope and write down what you see, because the envelope will restick afterwards and you won't be able to look at it again unless you do this business with the kettle all over.
