Nancy Drew 24: The Captive Curse Hints
Opening the Letter Lock
of 10: This puzzle uses the letters that were written on the legend pages. Luckily, you don't have to put them in order; Nancy does that for you. Read to the end of this hint for step-by-step instructions to solve the puzzle.
of 10: Nancy arranges the pages to spell "entkommen," which is a German word that means "to escape." Seems appropriate here.
of 10: You've probably figured out that you need to put the letters at the right into the holes around the circle to make that word. But what happens when you try it?
of 10: The letters don't stay where you put them. Instead, each one slides into the space it's connected to on the right.
of 10: Well, okay, you say to yourself, that's not such a problem; I'll just put in the next letter using the space that will get it in the right place. And that works for a while --
of 10: -- but eventually you find yourself in a situation where the slot you need is already filled by another letter, and then where are you? Push the arrow button at the top of the page to reset the puzzle and start again.
of 10: What you need to do here is to build the word backwards, and every other letter at that. It sounds horrible, and frankly it is rather, but it's not impossible.
of 10: Let's say you're playing as a Junior detective. Place the final N anywhere on the circle; it immediately moves two spaces to the right. Now imagine the rest of the word in place, winding counterclockwise from the N. The letter that will go in the space where you initially put the N is M. So pick up the M and place it so that it ends up in that space. See how it works?
of 10: No? Well, never mind. Here's a picture showing exactly how to put the letters in place:
