Nancy Drew 27: The Deadly Device Hints

How do I get into Mason's computer?

  • 1 of 12: The whiteboard in Mason's cubicle is the starting point to finding the password to Mason's computer. Read to the end of this hint for that password.
  • 2 of 12: Take a look at the whiteboard. Unless you're an electrical engineer, it's probably all Greek to you -- but what else strikes you as unusual about it?
  • 3 of 12: Random letters on this board are written in orange rather than black. And what else is orange?
  • 4 of 12: At the lower left of the board is a sort of hangman pattern. It seems pretty clear that the orange letters are going to go into the orange hangman layout.
  • 5 of 12: It also tells you that there are 14 letters to find. So go through the board and write all the orange letters on a piece of paper.
  • 6 of 12: Unfortunately, it's not immediately clear what "EEOMANWTOLSSTH" spells out. What else can you tell from the hangman arrangement?
  • 7 of 12: The first word has an apostrophe followed by a single letter. That looks like the pattern is going to be a possessive -- somebody's something, like George's birthday or Nancy's dentist or something.
  • 8 of 12: So the letter after the apostrophe is an S. As to who or what goes before that, well, everybody in this place is obsessed with one person --
  • 9 of 12: -- and that's Nikola Tesla. So if the first word is "Tesla's," that leaves EOMNWOTH to work with. Well, it's fewer letters to work with.
  • 10 of 12: It doesn't spell out "birthday" or "favorite dog" or anything. It's got to be something that's a matter of public record, something you could easily look up, something that doesn't change.
  • 11 of 12: How about "home town"? That is to say, not the place he was living in when he died, but where he was born. You can find that in the book about Tesla in Nancy's locker.
  • 12 of 12: Tesla was born in the city of SMILJAN, and that is Mason's password. Type it in, using either the keyboard on the screen or your actual physical keyboard, and press enter.
