Nancy Drew 27: The Deadly Device Hints

How do I use the oscillator?

  • 1 of 10: The oscillator is a box that vibrates at controlled frequencies; it can be used to simulate the effect of an earthquake on a very small scale. You'll find it to the right of the two tables in the middle of the big lab room.
  • 2 of 10: You won't find a need for this machine until very late in the game, after you get into Niko's study.
  • 3 of 10: To use the oscillator, you'll need to know what frequency each of the six levers turns on and what frequency you need. And of course, you need to know what item you want to have oscillated.
  • 4 of 10: You'll find all three of those things inside Niko's study. The yellow piece of paper next to the computer tells you the frequency of each of the levers.
  • 5 of 10: For the frequency you need, listen to Niko's diary 3, which you'll find on the table to the right as you face the door. At the end, he talks about Tesla bringing down Wardenclyffe Tower, an experimental transmitter tower he built, with an earthquake simulator set at a frequency of 37. So that's the frequency.
  • 6 of 10: And that's also the item to be oscillated. You can find a model of Wardenclyffe on the table to the right (with your back to the door); it looks a little like a lighthouse. You couldn't take it before, but you can now. And what will happen when you oscillate it? Well, let's find out.
  • 7 of 10: Put the model in the oscillator box and close the doors. Now you need to do a little elementary math and get the frequency to exactly 37.
  • 8 of 10: According to the yellow paper, the frequency of the levers is 13, 11, 9, 7, 5, and 4, left to right. You need to pull enough levers to add up to 37. There might be more than one way to get to 37 here --
  • 9 of 10: -- but I did it by flipping levers 1, 2, 3, and 6 (13+11+9+4 = 37). Wait a moment, and if you got the right number, you'll discover the little secret hidden in the Wardenclyffe model.
  • 10 of 10: The key that's revealed fits in the keyhole in the computer in Niko's study.
