Nancy Drew 28: Ghost of Thornton Hall Hints
How do I set the clocks?
of 12: Again, you'll need two things to start solving this puzzle. One is in this room, and the other will be dropped just outside this room.
of 12: You can find a note that tells you how the clocks need to be set inside the jewelry box on the dresser by the bed.
of 12: You're now ready to try to get all the clocks to reach 12 o'clock at the same time, which is going to be harder than it sounds. Read to the end of this hint for complete directions.
of 12: Put the key in the keyhole (which is under the mantelpiece at the right) and pull the odd switch in the middle to start the clocks running. Can you see the problem here?
of 12: The clocks all run at different speeds -- the one on the far right barely ekes along, while the second one whizzes around like mad. So how do we figure out how to make them all hit noon at the same time?
of 12: Pull the switch to turn the clocks off again, and let's try a little experiment. Set each clock to 12:00, then pull the switch to start the clocks. When clock 2, the fastest one, gets to 1:00, pull the switch to turn them off and see what you have.
of 12: When clock 2 is at 1:00, clocks 1 and 4 are at 12:30. That means they're half as fast as clock 2.
of 12: And clocks 3 and 5 are at 12:15, which means they're a quarter as fast as clock 2 and half as fast as clocks 2 and 4. So where does that get us?
of 12: It means that in the time it takes the slowest clock to run an hour, the fastest clock will go four hours, and the middle clocks will go two hours. Aha!
of 12: So to get all four clocks to hit 12 o'clock at the same time, set them like this:
of 12: And here's a heads-up: You may need to do this puzzle a second time at the end of the game -- when the clock speeds will all be different. Argh!!
