Nancy Drew 29: The Silent Spy Hints
How do I work the bench puzzle?
of 9: The goal here is to slide the entire row of red things (what Nancy calls canisters) to the far right. Read to the end of this hint for a step by step.
of 9: If you grab one of the canisters and try pulling it to the right, you can see the problem; the track becomes much smaller under the "Reset" button so the canisters don't fit. You can turn each individual canister to make it horizontal, and then it fits --
of 9: -- but you can only turn a canister when it's in the wheel slot, and only when the two canisters next to it are vertical. In order to slide the rack all the way to the right, you need to make every canister horizontal.
of 9: So the tactic here is going to be a matter of turning one canister so you can reach another one, then turning the first one again so you can get back to the beginning.
of 9: The way this works in practice is to turn the last canister on the right, then slide the rack over and turn the canister two over, then go back and make the last canister vertical again, which lets you turn the canister one over, then make the last canister horizontal again so you can now reach the canister four over.
of 9: Basically, you're making as much as possible of the row horizontal so you can reach the left side of the rack, then making it all vertical again so you can turn the next one over, if that image makes any more sense to you.
of 9: Here's a major hint: Turn the last canister first. In fact, turn the last canister every other time -- turn the last one, then slide the rack right as far as it'll go and turn that one, then turn the last one again, and so on.
of 9: I admit, it's complicated, and it involves a lot of repetition that seems pointless at first. You may not see what's going on here until you've gone through the process. But it does work, I promise.
of 9: So here's the solution to the bench puzzle:
