Nancy Drew 11: Curse of Blackmoor Manor Hints
Who was Cromwell?
Oliver Cromwell was a real person in English history (1599-1658) who overthrew and beheaded King Charles I. He then instituted a very repressive fanatical Puritan regime in which it was illegal to be a Roman Catholic, among other things. Many devout people who were rich enough to own large houses, like Elinor in this story, helped their priests hide to save them from being arrested, and mansions build in the 1600's are occasionally found to have hidden rooms called "priest holes" built for this purpose.
