Someone stole one of my items!
1 of 4: The first time you come out of the water after diving in the catacombs, you'll find a rat sniffing around your stuff. And sometimes (it seems to be random) one of your items is missing from inventory when you get out. Did the rat take it? If so, he's got bigger pockets than most rats!
2 of 4: The thing that disappears is different every time; it'll be something that makes the puzzles easier but isn't absolutely necessary, like the code book. Every time I've played a game where something gets taken, it's always a book.
3 of 4: This will only occur the first time you come out of the water, but otherwise it's a completely random event. That means that if you load a saved game and replay the catacombs sequence, the next time you might get to keep all your stuff. If you absolutely can't do without the stolen thing, try replaying it and see what happens next time.
4 of 4: Another way to avoid losing anything is to put off buying any of the books you need until after your first catacomb visit. The rat can't take what isn't there, after all.
