I don't have a cell phone!
1 of 3: No, you don't, since Nancy rather oddly put hers in her checked luggage and so doesn't have it with her. But it doesn't really matter; there are two phones that you can use whenever you want, one at the office and one at JJ's place. Any usable phone numbers you see in the game will be added to the in-game directory, so you don't need to write them down.
2 of 3: If you want to call the U.S., you'll have to use the phone card your dad gave you. It's in your inventory. To use it, click on the phone, then dial the number for the Zippy Calling Card. The phone rings, then you hear a softer dial tone and see a new directory with US numbers. Dial the one you want (including the 1 in front) to be connected. And unlike real life, you don't need to worry about the time difference; whenever you call they'll be awake.
3 of 3: Is it a pain to punch in those long number sequences? Yes, rather. But I think it's done on purpose to keep you from relying too heavily on your buddies for hints.
