Nancy Drew: Danger By Design Hints
How do I use the darkroom to develop the photos?
1 of 7: Before you go into the darkroom, look around the main room for the binder Dieter told you about. It's on the bookshelf at right next to the fish tank.
2 of 7: It's a little hard to translate, but here's the breakdown: 1. Put the negative in the enlarger. 2. Turn off the lights. 3. Turn on the enlarger and leave it on for 2 to 9 seconds, then turn it off. 4. Put the print in the developer for 7 to 12 seconds. 5. Put the print in the stop bath for 1 to 5 seconds. 6. Put the print in the fixer for 8 to 15 seconds.
3 of 7: Sound tough? It is, especially since all of this has to be done in complete darkness, and if you click on the wrong spot you'll knock over a bunch of chemicals, and boom! No more darkroom.
4 of 7: Here's what I do to make it a little easier. Get yourself a bunch of sticky notes and make up one for steps 3 through 6 of the process, including the number of seconds; then put the sticky notes on your monitor to show you where to click. Your screen will look like this:
5 of 7: Then all you have to do is pick up a slide from the sink and put it in the enlarger, turn off the lights, and follow your sticky notes, left to right. Count off the required time out loud -- "One hippopotamus, two hippopotamus, three hippopotamus" -- rather than using a watch or something; it's too hard to keep track of the screen and the watch at the same time. When you're in the middle of the range, pick up the print and move it to the next step.
6 of 7: When you finish a print correctly, Nancy will show you the finished print; put in the next slide and repeat. There are four prints to make. If you make a mistake along the way, Nancy will tell you and you'll have to start that print again, but there's no penalty for this, so just keep at it.
7 of 7: Of course, this whole time Dieter will be trying to mess up your counting by throwing out irrelevant numbers. Ignore him, grit your teeth, and keep counting.
