Who hit Joe? And why?
It was JK -- Johnny Kuto, the guy who left the pawn shop receipt. The plot's a little confused here, but what seems to have happened is that Mike made a deal with Johnny to steal the beetle pheromones for him, in exchange for letting him use the underwater chamber to store stolen goods. But when the chamber was closed by earthquakes, Johnny couldn't get into it. He got mad at Mike and came to the office to threaten him, but when he got there he found Joe in the office instead -- so he decided hitting one of Mike's guests would be as effective a message as hitting Mike himself. Goofy, yes, but there's no IQ test for crooks, you know.
