What is frass, anyway?

  • Well, not to be too coy about it, but it's, um, bug poop -- or more accurately, it's the excrement of larvae and refuse left behind by boring insects. (That's insects that drill holes, by the way, not insects that make you yawn.)

    Yes, I know, ew and a half. But if you want to know what bugs live in a tree and what they're eating, collecting and analyzing droppings is a great way to find out. This is why entomologists have so few friends.
