Nancy Drew: The White Wolf of Icicle Creek Hints

How do I open the door by the bone imprint?

  • 1 of 8: The obvious thing to do is get that bone and stick it in the bone-shaped dent in the wall.
  • 2 of 8: But that's just the first step, since putting the bone in the dent doesn't open the door, it just reveals another puzzle (sigh). Read to the end of this hint for a step-by-step solution.
  • 3 of 8: Take a look at the puzzle here. Can you see what the goal is? You'll find a hint in Trapper Dan's Journal; this is what he refers to as his "infernal slot machine."
  • 4 of 8: You need to arrange the animal disks so the columns are in the same pattern as shown on the sides: fish on the top, owl (or is it a cat?) in the middle, and rabbit on the bottom. Pick up the disk with the duck thing on the left and drop it into a slot to see how this works.
  • 5 of 8: This is more complicated than it looks. It helps, as Trapper Dan suggested, to start by putting the animals in columns: all the fish on the left, all the owls/cats in the middle, and all the rabbits on the right, for example. Then you can assemble the columns after that.
  • 6 of 8: But the bottom line is that this is a maddening puzzle that kind of short-circuits my brain. Back away from the door to reset the puzzle if it gets too jumbled up and you want to start over.
  • 7 of 8: And if it just makes you too crazy, here's a step-by-step to solve the silly thing:
  • 8 of 8: And once you do get inside at last, you'll find that the mysteries are just beginning.
