Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion Hints

Hints for Senior Detectives

  • 1 of 12: Click the below link to read the poem again.
  • 2 of 12: The poem says that you should "move like a knight."
  • 3 of 12: Knight.  Where have you seen that before?
  • 4 of 12: In chess, one of the playing pieces is a knight!
  • 5 of 12: The book "Lessons in Chess" sits to the left of the laptop computer and is open to "The Knight" lesson.  The picture in the book shows a grid of 5 blocks across and 5 down.  The grid on the puzzle has 4 blocks, however, so more imagination is necessary.
  • 6 of 12: The Knight is placed on the chessboard at the top or bottom row and one space in from the left and right.  Those of you who play chess know that a Knight can move 2 squares forward, backward, or sideways and then move 1 square to the Knight's left or right to form an "L" shape.
  • 7 of 12: Even though the puzzle can be solved in many ways, it can be solved in as few as 4 moves.
  • 8 of 12: The poem gives you your first move.  Click on a block where the Knight would normally sit on the board.  On either the top or bottom row, click the second from the left or right.
  • 9 of 12: For the next block, remember the way a Knight can move and the clue about "alongside the outside border."
  • 10 of 12: From your first choice, count over 2 spaces to the left, right, up, or down and check a block to the Knight's left or right on the outside edge.
  • 11 of 12: Keep the rules in mind for the next two moves.
  • 12 of 12: One solution is shown in this Illustration.
