Solving the Diabolical Puzzle (Seniors)

  • 1 of 9: Looking at the diagram, you can see that after you set dials 1 and 2, no other dials will interfere with them.  So, you should go ahead and set these dials.  Actually, after you set dial 1, then dial 2 happens to be set correctly.  Set dials 1 and 2 by rotating dial 1 three times.
  • 2 of 9: Looking at the diagram, you can now see that after you set dial 8, no other dials will interfere with it.  So, you can go ahead and set dial 8.  Set dial 8 by rotating it three times.
  • 3 of 9: Looking at the diagram, you can see that dial 6 rotates no other dials but itself.  You know that you will set this dial last.
  • 4 of 9: That leaves dials 3, 4, 5, and 7.  It has been easy up to this point, but now the real puzzle begins.  You must look at the diagram and figure out how to set these four remaining dials.
  • 5 of 9: Dial 4 affects dial 7, and dial 7 affects dial 4.  Therefore, you won't get anywhere rotating those dials now, so save them for a moment.
  • 6 of 9: That leaves dials 3 and 5.  Which one do you rotate first?  Well, notice how dial 3 affects dial 7.  Dial 7 is one of the dials remaining to be set; perhaps you can set it by rotating dial 3.  Set dial 7 by rotating dial 3 four times.
  • 7 of 9: You still need to set dials 3, 4, and 5 (and dial 6 last).  Look what happens when you rotate dial 5 one time: it sets these three dials at once!  Set dials 3, 4, and 5 by rotating dial 5 one time.
  • 8 of 9: That leaves dial 6, which only affects itself.  Rotate dial 6 two times.
  • 9 of 9: That's it!  "5 0, 1 0, 0 5, 0 1"!  So, to summarize:

    1) Rotate dial 1 three times.
    2) Rotate dial 8 three times.
    3) Rotate dial 3 four times.
    4) Rotate dial 5 one time.
    5) Rotate dial 6 two times.
