Solving the Diabolical Puzzle (Juniors)

  • 1 of 6: Looking at the diagram, you can see that after you set dials 1, 2, 3, and 4, no other dials will interfere with them.  So, you should go ahead and set these dials.  Set dial 1 by rotating dial 1 four times, set dial 2 by rotating dial 2 one time, set dial 3 by rotating dial 3 five times, and set dial 4 by rotating dial 4 one time.
  • 2 of 6: Looking at the diagram, you can now see that you should set dial 8 before setting dial 5, compared to the other way around, as dial 8 affects dial 5.  Set dial 8 by rotating it one time.
  • 3 of 6: Looking at the diagram, you can see that dial 7 rotates no other dials but itself.  You know that you will set this dial last.
  • 4 of 6: That leaves dials 5 and 6 (followed by 7).  Which one do you rotate first?  Well, notice how dial 5 affects dial 6, but not the other way around.  Set dial 5 by rotating dial 5 two times, then set dial 6 by rotating dial 6 two times.
  • 5 of 6: That leaves dial 7, which only affects itself.  Rotate dial 7 three times.
  • 6 of 6: That's it!  "5 0, 1 0, 0 5, 0 1"!  So, to summarize:

    1) Rotate dial 1 four times.
    2) Rotate dial 2 one time.
    3) Rotate dial 3 five times.
    4) Rotate dial 4 one time.
    5) Rotate dial 8 one time.
    6) Rotate dial 5 two times.
    7) Rotate dial 6 two times.
    8) Rotate dial 7 three times.
