Tips on Translating Roman Numerals

  • 1 of 4: As Jeff suggests, if you are rusty on your Roman numerals, read the entry about them in the database.  The entry is located under "Creation of Moon Lake State Park".
  • 2 of 4: Like the entry in the database says, Roman numerals translate like this: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, and M = 1000.
  • 3 of 4: The easy part about Roman numerals is, for the most part, you just add the numerals together.  For example, MMII = 2002.  ("MM" is "M + M", or 2000.  "II" is "I + I", or 2.  Therefore, 2000 + 2 = 2002.)
  • 4 of 4: The tricky part about Roman numerals is the 4's and 9's, since you subtract any smaller Roman numeral found to the *left* of a larger Roman numeral, rather than add them.  For example, MCMXLIX = 1949.  ("M" is 1000.  "CM" is "M - C", or 1000 - 100, or 900; you just subtract the C from the M.  "XL" is "L - X", or 50 - 10, or 40; you just subtract the X from the L.  "IX" is "X - I", or 10 - 1, or 9; you just subtract the I from the X.  Therefore, 1000 + 900 + 40 + 9 = 1949.)
