Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark Hints

How should I prepare before going through the gateway to Waterdeep?

  • 1 of 10: In every way imaginable. As soon as you emerge in Waterdeep, you'll have to face Mephistopheles at the height of his power and treachery.
  • 2 of 10: His first act will be to try to seduce all of your henchmen into joining him and fighting you! This will be impossible for him to pull off if you know and use the True Names of the henchmen you take with you. If you don't know their True Names, you still have a chance at persuading or intimidating them into staying with you, but those are difficult skill checks to pass. (With Deekin, all you have to do is say you'll miss him if he betrays you. The scaly sap!)
  • 3 of 10: If it's too late to restore back and buy the needed True Names, and if you can't ever persuade them to stick with you after several restores and retries, you'll just have to leave your henchmen behind and go it alone. I'll warn you now, though, that even a very well-equipped level 29 fighter will be in big, big trouble in that situation.
  • 4 of 10: Another vital way to prepare is to equip items for yourself and your henchmen that make you as resistant as possible to fire and cold damage. The Band of Fire and Frost that you could have gotten in the fire elemental cave in the Deepest Reaches of Cania is ideal for this, and many other items are available. Check the inventories of all the local merchants if you need to.
  • 5 of 10: Also, wear a Greater Archer's Belt if you have one, since it'll make you partially resistant to the piercing damage that Mephie's souped-up pitchfork does.
  • 6 of 10: One of the best items to have with you is a new Rod of Resurrection. Your henchmen will almost certainly be killed during the various stages of fighting Mephistopheles, and being able to instantly resurrect them at full hit points is a vital capability. Several merchants in the City of Lost Souls sell new rods, so invest in one and put it down on the main quickbar for easy use.
  • 7 of 10: Another great thing to have on the main quickbar is a set of ten Potions of Heal, which you can buy from Gru'ul the Quarry Boss if you're low on them. Whenever your hit points get too low during the battle, just hit your Potion of Heal quick key. (This is especially vital if you plan to go without any henchmen.)
  • 8 of 10: Since you're about to finish what will probably be the last-ever NWN expansion, you might as well sell off all excess items and use the proceeds to buy upgrades for all the weapons you plan on using during the endgame battle. Upgrade your planned henchmen's inventories and weapons too as much as you can, not forgetting to give them plenty of healing potions. (NOTE: The acid damage upgrade would be good for weapons that don't already have a damage upgrade.)
  • 9 of 10: When you've done all of the above, have one final resting session in the Reaper's realm, use all the buffing spells and potions that you have, save your game, and then head through the gateway to Waterdeep. Good luck!
  • 10 of 10: NOTE: The first time you approach the gateway to Waterdeep, the game will check a set of complicated conditions to see if a henchman will talk to you. If so, you'll get a chance to get some bonus XP by using the True Names of your henchmen (if you know those True Names). To make sure you get this opportunity, save your game before approaching the door and then try doing so with varying sets of henchmen (Aribeth always did it for me).
