Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark Hints

What should be my strategy during the battle with Mephistopheles?

  • 1 of 12: After you talk to Durnan (or skip that part by pressing ESC), you'll be confronted with Mephistopheles, who will immediately set about trying to seduce your henchmen over to his side.
  • 2 of 12: The absolute *most important* thing you need during the following battle sequence is two well-equipped and powerful henchmen fighting on your side. You'll need them to keep Mephistopheles busy while you back off periodically to heal. With no henchmen to provide that valuable service, you probably won't be able to keep yourself alive long enough to win (unless you use *lots* of Potions of Heal).
  • 3 of 12: If you can't get your henchmen to stay with you no matter what you do, you'll probably be forced to go back to an old saved game from before you returned to the City of Lost Souls with the Reaper's True Name. Either buy your henchmen's True Names or Mephistopheles', then play on from there.
  • 4 of 12: NOTE: If you have Mephistopheles' True Name, you have the option of using it right after he makes his attempt to trick your henchmen. And, hey, if you paid all that money to get his name, you might as well use it to stop his attacks and order him to die. The game will end with as good an ending as if you'd fought Mephie to the death and won, and you'll get a lot more XP. If you don't know his True Name or just can't resist fighting it out, read on for further hints.
  • 5 of 12: After your little conversation with the archdevil is over, you'll be able to hack at him for a bit, but he'll take off after sustaining minor damage and summon up a big cold storm complete with some icy opponents to fight.
  • 6 of 12: After you kill the three ice beasts and beat on Mephistopheles some more, he'll do the same routine with the element of fire. These two routines won't pose much of a problem if you've buffed yourself and your associates against fire and cold damage. If not, be ready to hit the quick keys you have set up for healing and resurrecting devices.
  • 7 of 12: NOTE: There are three high-up ledges with lamp posts that you can get to by using the demonic grappling hook. Doing this won't help you escape Mephistopheles for long since he can teleport you down to him, but it can get you away from the damage caused by the elemental storms. However, when the storms are over and Mephie teleports you back down to the ground, your henchmen may end up stuck on the ledge, leaving you to get gouged alone. Not good! If possible, stay down on the ground at all times.
  • 8 of 12: NOTE: The elemental beasts that are summoned during the element storms are nothing compared to Mephistopheles with all his hit points and damage resistances, so be sure to take the time to heal up and re-buff right before killing the third beast and getting Mephie back. This is especially important if you're forced to go through all of this without any henchmen.
  • 9 of 12: After the fire storm is over, Mephie'll be out of tricks and will concentrate on fighting you. This is when you need to use your henchmen (and Potions of Heal) to their fullest. Also, try any spells you have that can stun opponents. (Once when I played, I gave the Rod of Thunder and Lightning from Chapter 2's Cult Temple to Nathyrra, and she used it to stun Mephie several times. Very helpful!)
  • 10 of 12: NOTE: High-powered wizards can use the Black Blade of Disaster spell here to good effect. It might even be able to kill Mephistopheles instantly with its special attacks, though his saving throws are very high. Also, Mephie's somewhat vulnerable to acid damage, so try the Mestil's acid spells against him.
  • 11 of 12: He'll surrender when he's down to just a few hit points, hoping you'll make the mistake of merely banishing him back to Cania instead of finishing him off.
  • 12 of 12: It doesn't actually matter which one you do -- the game will be over successfully either way, and you'll see an ending sequence that gives some info on what happens later on to many of the game characters.
