Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark Hints
What are all the alchemist's fire kegs between the two main gates for?
of 9: Perhaps they're meant to be used somehow in the upcoming siege.
of 9: You could have some fun igniting the wicks now, but that's just wasteful.
of 9: The kegs are really very useful in a variety of situations. You should have at least two with you at all times (inside a Bag of Holding or a henchman's inventory, of course, since they're so heavy).
of 9: The most obvious use for the kegs is to blow stuff up. Anything that can take fire damage can be damaged by having a keg go off next to it.
of 9: You can use them to blow up stubborn locked treasure chests and doors, and you can use them to damage monsters in an area. Since most monsters move around and follow you, and you don't want to be next to a keg when it blows, you'll have to drop a keg or two in a narrow hallway or doorway between you and the monsters. Then light the wick and stand back!
of 9: As an alternative to blowing up the kegs to hurt monsters, you could just drop them to block a narrow passage or doorway. Make sure the kegs end up between you and the monsters chasing you, and then shoot the monsters with arrows and/or spells from a safe distance when they get stuck against the kegs. After the monsters are all dead, you can pick your kegs back up and use them again somewhere else.
of 9: The very coolest application of kegs is to "glitch" your way through closed doors that you can't open. To do that, move up against the door as far as you can, turn so your back is pressing against it, and then drop a keg. This usually won't work if you right-click on the keg in inventory and choose the "Drop" icon, so instead, pick up the keg from inventory and click it on the ground right in front of your character. That'll usually do the trick!
of 9: Last, and least, the kegs can be sold to merchants for a bit of gold.
of 9: NOTE: The kegs don't work anymore in Chapter 3, so take full advantage of them in Chapter 2.
