Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark Hints
How can I cross the bridge that leads to the Chasm of the Eye Tyrants?
of 13: Well, you're *supposed* to be a beholder so that you can just float across. However, since you're not, you'll have to try out the bridge mechanism that's right next to where the bridge should be.
of 13: Whether your Intelligence or Lore skill are high enough to decipher anything on the mechanism doesn't really matter -- just examine the buttons to get started on the bridge puzzle.
of 13: NOTE: You could buy the Pearl of Tongues from the djinni merchant for about $1,500 and insert it into the mechanism to translate everything, but it isn't really worth it. Another interesting though useless note is that if you have the Pearl of Bashing from the Thrall Pens area in Zorvak'Mur, you can insert it into the mechanism to get a "humorous" message. (For an explanation of what the message means, log onto nwn.bioware.com and check out their list of HoU's game secrets.)
of 13: The bridge puzzle is shown in a simple text symbol format with # and ! symbols.
of 13: Correlating the crude text diagram to the bridge area, you should soon guess that the four ! symbols represent bridge pieces and the # symbols show the border of the puzzle.
of 13: You need to get those four ! pieces all lined up, so start pressing buttons to see how the pieces move.
of 13: NOTE: Don't press the glowing button (option #9) until the bridge symbols are all lined up. If they aren't, you'll get zapped and the puzzle will reset.
of 13: Each of the first eight buttons will move one bridge piece in one direction. A bit of simple experimentation will reveal which piece is moved by which button. (Note that if a piece is at the left edge of the puzzle, pressing the button to move it left will have no effect.)
of 13: For example, it turns out that the button labeled "Galoon. Oring." moves the top ! to the right, and the oneĀ marked "Galoon. Vikik." moves it to the left. From that you can deduce that "galoon" means "top," "oring" means "right," and "vikik" means "left."
of 13: It doesn't really matter how far left or right on the puzzle board you line up the bridge pieces -- they just need to all be in a straight column somewhere.
of 13: The bridge puzzle always starts out in the same configuration, so button-by-button solutions are possible. Read on for one of them.
of 13: From the beginning, press buttons 3, 5, 5, 7, 7, 7, and 7 to get the bridge lined up, then press button 9 to activate it. Now you can cross and enter the beholder caves.
of 13: NOTE: If you're a spellcaster, or have an item like the Ring of Magic Defenses that can cast Dispel Magic, you can skip the whole darned puzzle by casting Dispel Magic on the ground just east of the bridge.
