Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark Hints
Do I get more XP with henchmen, less XP, or is it always the same?
1 of 4: I said in the main Neverwinter Nights UHS hint file that you can get more combat XP with a henchman, at least after a few level-ups, but that doesn't seem to be true anymore. In all my tests in HoU, I always got more XP *without* henchmen (except for quest XP, which seems to always be the same). This also seems to be the case now in the NWN main campaign unless you have an unpatched original version (v1.10) installed.
2 of 4: It would be very tough to play all the way through the game without any henchmen to help with the fighting and item carrying, but it might be possible. True XP seekers will try every area without henchmen and only hire them temporarily when necessary.
3 of 4: I've noticed that the groups of monsters in some areas are smaller if you're alone, while going in with a henchman increases the number of monsters. One way to deal with this is to always have a henchman or two with you when you enter an area, and then drop them off with instructions to wait there for you as soon as you arrive. Then you can run around the area and do all the combat yourself, thereby gaining maximum XP. Having the henchmen nearby is also handy if you find that you need one to join you for an extra-hard combat, if you need to offload heavy items or have items identified, etc.
4 of 4: NOTE: Installing the v1.62 patch seems to eliminate the "missing monsters when alone" problem, but I think the drop-off henchman strategy is still a useful one.
