Neverwinter Nights: Kingmaker Hints
Logic Problem Setup and Solution
Set up your logic problem solving space like the diagram below, where each letter represents a color (R=red, O=orange, etc.) and each cluster of six letters represents an urn. The top left one will be the northwest urn, and so on.
ROYGBP ROYGBP ROYGBP -- north row of urns ROYGBP ROYGBP ROYGBP -- south row of urns
As you go through the clues, you will be able to eliminate some of the possibilities at each urn, and "cross off" letters/colors on your diagram, until only one color remains at each urn. (Note that I can't actually cross off letters in my diagrams here, so I'll delete them instead.)
The first clue says that the red fires burned north of the green trees, so from that we know that red has to go in one of the three north urns, and green has to go in one of the three south urns. That means we can eliminate red as a possibility from all three south urns, and green can be ruled out for all the three north urns, giving:
ROY BP ROY BP ROY BP -- north row of urns OYGBP OYGBP OYGBP -- south row of urns
The second clue says the yellow sun sets to the east of the red fires. That means that yellow has to be in one of the north urns, and it can't be in the NW urn because it has to be east (to the right) of red. Also, if something is east of red, then red can't be in the NE urn, since there's nothing east of it. That in turn means that green can't be in the SE urn since it has to be directly south of red. This gives:
RO BP ROY BP OY BP -- north row of urns O GBP O GBP O BP -- south row of urns
The third clue says that the sky is blue east of the purple mountains. Blue being east of purple means that neither the NW urn nor the SW urn can be blue (since it has to be east of something), and neither the NE urn nor the SE urn can be purple (since something has to be east of it). This brings us to:
RO P ROY BP OY B -- north row of urns O G P O GBP O B -- south row of urns
The fourth clue is that the green trees grow west of the purple mountains. Since we already know that green has to be in a southern urn, we now know that purple also has to be in a southern urn (and it can't be the SW urn because green has to be west of it). This yields:
RO ROY B OY B -- north row of urns O G O GBP O B -- south row of urns
Checking the diagram, we now see that the south central urn is the only possibility for purple. Using that with clue #4, that means green has to be in the SW urn, and using that with clue #1, red has to be in the NW urn. Also, according to clue #3, blue has to be in the SE urn. Now we're getting there!
R OY OY -- north row of urns G P B -- south row of urns
All we need now is to know exactly where orange and yellow go, and the fifth clue tells us. It says the orange harvest moon rises above the blue skies. That means orange has to be in the NE urn, so the north central urn must be yellow. Done!
R Y O -- north row of urns G P B -- south row of urns
