Horns of the Shadow Hart
1 of 12: Talk to Valiantheart in the Hilltop Foothills region about who he is and why he's there to get this quest.
2 of 12: He wants the horns from a special white stag, and it's up to you to get them for him.
3 of 12: In order to find the Shadow Hart, you have to find some of its tracks.
4 of 12: There are nine sets of tracks in all. To see where they all are, check the following map of the Hilltop Foothills region. Each set of tracks is marked with a large red X.
5 of 12: Unfortunately, the tracks themselves can be hard to spot, even if you're standing right next to them in Detect mode.
6 of 12: If you're near some unspotted tracks, you have a 5% chance once per minute of spotting the tracks. The chance is increased by your Spot skill, and by your Intelligence if it's over 12. Also, it's *greatly* increased if you're a ranger, druid, or barbarian.
7 of 12: As for spotting the Shadow Hart itself, you have a 10% chance of that for each set of tracks you've already spotted. That means it's possible to spot the Hart after finding only one set of its tracks, but it'll be more likely if you've found several.
8 of 12: You'll know the Hart has appeared nearby when you get a message about hearing the sound of a strange creature somewhere nearby.
9 of 12: When you get that message, check out the nearest sets of tracks -- the Shadow Hart will be near one of them, even if it's a set you didn't detect.
10 of 12: You could talk to the Hart and warn it off, but the best thing to do is attack it and kill it. That way you can get its horns and heart from the body. (However, since the Shadow Hart can teleport around during battle, it may be too much of a pain to kill it, and warning it off at least gets you some XP.)
11 of 12: Give the horns to Valiantheart to finish his quest, then take the heart to Drogan's Home for use in the grinder. (See the Notes and Extras for details on that.)
12 of 12: NOTE: If you don't care about finishing this quest by giving the horns to Valiantheart, you may want to kill him to get his magic longbow, lots of Ice Arrows, and an Amulet of Natural Armor +1. Also, you can take the horns to Fiona the smith in Hilltop West and either sell them to her or pay her to make a nice Shadow Helm out of them.
