Neverwinter Nights Hints
The Gauntlet Arena
of 16: You start on this quest in the City Core.
of 16: The guy to talk to is Graxx in the Trade of Blades.
of 16: Ask him where the action is, and he'll tell you about the Gauntlet if you're a fighter, barbarian, paladin, or ranger. (Other classes will have to pass a persuade check first.)
of 16: Buy a pass from Graxx, then go give it to the bartender in the Board Laid Bare tavern in the Blacklake District.
of 16: The bartender gives you a key to the central south door, so go open it and continue on into the hidden arena that is the Gauntlet.
of 16: Talk to Kellisai to learn about the rules and to start a round.
of 16: There are four increasingly tough combats to be fought one at a time, and you can always put off the next combat for after you've adventured elsewhere and leveled up, if you want to. There's no need to do them all at once.
of 16: If you find either of the first three guys too tough to handle, even with a good henchman like Grimgnaw or Daelan Redtiger, then you'll have to put them off.
of 16: But that's not necessarily the case with Claudus, the fourth and final contestant.
of 16: Notice how he's surrounded in magical-looking energy, even though Kellisai supposedly casts a powerful Dispel Magic on all contestants before they enter the cage.
of 16: That's because Claudus is the owner of the tavern, and he always says that anyone who can beat him will be the new owner.
of 16: He really doesn't want to lose the place, so he pays Kellisai off to cast a powerful protective magic around him instead of Dispel Magic.
of 16: The way to put a stop to this is to grill Kellisai about the fairness of the match after accepting the fight with Claudus.
of 16: You can try to persuade her to play fair, or bribe her to do so if you have enough gold. (Human characters can also appeal to her on the basis of not making the human race look bad.)
of 16: If you succeed in any of those equalizer tactics, Claudus will go down far easier than any of the other three guys did.
of 16: You're now the owner of what's left of the Board Laid Bare tavern after Claudus and his cronies leave. You can even ask the bartender to hand over the week's earnings! (But you still have to pay for stuff you buy from his store.)
