Neverwinter Nights Hints

How do I solve the Riddle of Smoke?

  • 1 of 21: Heading south and west past the door, you'll find three items that all relate to this riddle.
  • 2 of 21: There's an alchemist's apparatus table with some colored powder items on it that you should take.
  • 3 of 21: There's a brazier that you should put all the colored powder into.
  • 4 of 21: And there's an easel that will give you a clue as to what order to put the colored powders into the brazier.
  • 5 of 21: There's another clue as to the color order on the Old One Defenses scrolls that can be found in various places, including on the corpse that's in the Riddle of Light room (in both past and present).
  • 6 of 21: So you're to put the powders into the brazier in some special order according to the gems at the base of the brazier.
  • 7 of 21: Now the easel's clue comes into play. It tells you in what order those gems are.
  • 8 of 21: It says that malachite is least (therefore, first), followed by amethyst, and concluded with emerald.
  • 9 of 21: We all know emeralds are green, but what about the other two?
  • 10 of 21: If you look up "amethyst" in the dictionary, it should say that amethysts are usually purple.
  • 11 of 21: That leaves malachite to be orange, since the brazier's three base gems are green, purple, and orange.
  • 12 of 21: So the proper color order is: orange, purple, green.
  • 13 of 21: So how do you combine red, blue, and yellow powders to get orange, purple, and green?
  • 14 of 21: This is basic color arithmetic, and is taught in every elementary school art class. Here's a reminder in case you've forgotten:
  • 15 of 21: orange = red + yellow
    purple = red + blue
    green = blue + yellow
  • 16 of 21: So now you can see what order to drop the powders into the brazier, right?
  • 17 of 21: If not, read on for the exact answer.
  • 18 of 21: First, put in one red powder and one yellow powder (in either order).
  • 19 of 21: Next, put in one red powder and one blue powder (in either order).
  • 20 of 21: Finally, put in one blue powder and one yellow powder (in either order).
  • 21 of 21: That's it! The smoke-related lock on the vault is now gone.
