Neverwinter Nights Hints
Strategies for Handling Tough Combats
1) Simply restore your saved game (which you made right before the combat, right?) and try again without changing anything. This is especially useful if you just barely lose a combat. Next time, you might just barely win instead.
2) Restore your save and cast protective spells and/or use potions. Healing up and using potions or spells like Bless, Barkskin, Bull's Strength, and so on can make a really big difference. Once you're at this step, you know you need them, so carefully choose and use some, then save again before going into combat (just in case).
3) Try the combat again with a different henchman, and possibly different (or more) healing and enhancement spells. For example, I usually have Tomi Undergallows as my henchman because he can handle most of the numerous locks and traps in the game. However, I sometimes have to temporarily ditch him for Daelan Red Tiger or Grimgnaw to get past an extra-tough combat.
4) A last resort that works in many cases is to dodge and run past the combat. This works if several tough monsters stand between you and a door you need to go through or an object you need to take. You can usually make it past them if you're healed up enough to take whatever damage they can hit you with on your way through (or if you sneak through while invisible), but remember that you'll miss out on some experience points, and will level up more slowly if you use this strategy a lot (unless you combine it with #5 below).
5) So nothing has worked, eh? Then you'll have to back off, wait until you've leveled up at least once, and then come back. This is especially appropriate if you already have nearly enough XP to go up a level.
