Neverwinter Nights 2 Hints
Combat Tips
of 8: Unless you're looking for a real challenge, you should always play through the game on Normal difficulty (which is the default setting) and with the max number of companions with you at all times. Gameplay was carefully balanced to give a not-too-hard-and-not-too-easy gameplay experience in this way.
of 8: It always pays to use the Pause key (SPACEBAR on the PC) frequently during combat. While paused, you can scroll the screen around to survey the battlefield and see what's happening, you can give each member in your party individual orders (by switching control to them and having them do something), and you can take your time in deciding on a new target when you finish off the one you're currently attacking.
of 8: It's a good idea to save items you find in treasure that can protect you against certain spell effects or forms of attack, even if those items aren't ones you'd normally wear. For instance, the Archer's Belts, Brawler's Belts, and Swordsman's Belts each protect against a different type of physical damage. Even if you normally wear a belt that enhances your Strength, you should keep those other belts handy for fights against very powerful monsters that give you a lot of trouble. You could wear a Swordsman's Belt to help protect against the slashing attacks of a powerful dragon's claws, for example.
of 8: If you're having a really hard time getting past a certain combat or series of combats, here's a list of things to try.
of 8: One vital hit-point-restoring tip that you mustn't overlook is resting. You can almost always rest and fully heal anywhere as long as there are no enemies right nearby. (If some that haven't detected you yet are nearby, just retreat a short ways back the way you came and try again.) This fact makes having a lot of healing potions and spells in stock unnecessary -- just have a few handy for when you need to restore HP in the middle of battle.
of 8: Another strategy that's good for large rooms full of monsters is to get them to follow you down narrow corridors. This will help to ensure that no more than one or two of them are beating on you at once.
of 8: A useful tactic in many battles where you're overwhelmed by sheer numbers is to have your companions stand their ground a ways back before the monsters know you're around. Then go lure a few of them at a time back to your companions, ordering them to follow you when you get back to them. After whatever chased you there is finished off, repeat the process if necessary to draw others in. (Note that the best way to issue the "Stand Your Ground" and "Follow Me" commands is to broadcast them by right-clicking and holding on the ground, then choosing "Broadcast Command" from the list of basic actions.)
of 8: Also, you can often leave the area you're in by going back through the door to the previous area, even in the middle of combat, as long as none of your people are unconscious. The enemes won't follow you from one area to another, and you can rest up and re-buff before going back in and resuming the battle.
