The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Frenzy Tips

  • 1 of 11: If you want to kill off a non-hostile NPC without getting any bounty put on you, get his disposition way down (preferably under 10) using the persuasion mini-game and then cast a Frenzy spell on him that's powerful enough to affect him.
  • 2 of 11: Since you can't tell what level an NPC is just by looking at him, it's a good idea to buy a basic Frenzy spell and then use a spellmaking altar to make a specialized Frenzy spell.
  • 3 of 11: Make its magnitude 25 so it'll affect NPCs up to level 25, make it work on touch, and make the duration be at least 10 seconds.
  • 4 of 11: If you want to use this spell to attack someone without getting in trouble, cast it on him while standing next to him with your weapon out so that you can start quickly whacking on him as soon as he turns hostile. Be sure to stop attacking before the spell wears off.
  • 5 of 11: You can also use the spell in an area with more than one person by casting it on someone and letting other people (including guards) go after him. However, don't try using the spell on a guard, and always save first due to the warnings below.
  • 6 of 11: WARNINGS: You sometimes get a bounty even if you don't do any attacking at all. If you attack an NPC in a house or store and go outside while they're still hostile, they'll follow and you'll probably get an instant bounty. Also, attacking a fleeing NPC usually gets you a bounty.
  • 7 of 11: If an NPC flees his house or store, wait until the Frenzy spell wears off (when the Rest key no longer gives you the message about enemies nearby), then go outside and see if you can find the NPC. He may be standing nearby, totally invisible until you talk to him! Or he may go back inside on his own. It's hard to predict.
  • 8 of 11: You can use the above fact to help you rob houses and stores unseen. Frenzy-up the resident NPC, then injure him until he flees outside. You can then snatch things until the spell wears off and he returns. When he does, hit him with Frenzy again and he'll immediately run off, allowing you more item-grabbing time.
  • 9 of 11: Also, you can have a lot of fun in the Arcane University where a lot of generic Mage Apprentice and Mage Scholar characters wander around. You never get a bounty for frenzying them up, and you can get leveled magic daggers from them. Just don't kill any of them yourself or you'll be expelled from the Mages Guild. (You can also get their daggers by pickpocketing them as they sleep in the Mages Quarters' upstairs and basement areas, but that's not nearly as fun.)
  • 10 of 11: If you can get your Chameleon percentage up to 100 via potions or enchanted clothing (see the Enchanting Tips), you can make hostile NPCs like necromancers and bandits kill each other off by casting your Frenzy spell on them. You could also try that if you're visible, but they'll often choose to attack you instead of each other.
  • 11 of 11: After you level up past level 25, most leveled NPCs will be immune to your Frenzy spell. If you have the Shivering Isles expansion installed, do its main quest series until you get the Ruin's Edge bow, since it can frenzy just about any NPC no matter what level he is (including city guards).
