The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Exactly what is she referring to?

  • 1 of 8: There are identical totems in several goblins caves, including the Barren Mine (location 27 on the Blackwood map), the Derelict Mine (location 18 on the West Weald map), Goblin Jim's Cave (location 12 on the same map), the Plundered Mine (location 14 on the Jerall and Valus Mountains map), and Wenderbek Cave (location 48 on the Nibenay map).
  • 2 of 8: The idea is that goblin tribes will send out war parties to follow their stolen totems anywhere.
  • 3 of 8: Not when the totems are in your inventory or another container, but only when you drop them on the ground outside somewhere.
  • 4 of 8: It'll take them time to get there (more time the farther away you take the totem from their lair), but they eventually will.
  • 5 of 8: You can test this out by dropping the stolen totem you got in Timberscar Hollow on the ground somewhere and waiting until the Bloody Hand goblins from Cracked Wood Cave show up to reclaim it.
  • 6 of 8: NOTES: If you decimate a tribe enough, it may not be able to send out any totem-recovering war parties. Also, if you're not nearby when the war party reaches the totem, there probably won't be any battle, and the totem will simply be gone when you return. (See the AI radius info in the Misc. Tips.)
  • 7 of 8: You can have fun with the various goblin tribes by sneakily stealing their totems and dropping them all together in one area so they'll all come together and fight over them, or you can drop them in areas often patrolled by Imperial Legionnaires so they'll kill the goblins when they arrive.
  • 8 of 8: However, don't just dump the totems somewhere and forget about them. They're all usable as magic shock staffs, and can be sold for a lot of gold.
