The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Sigil Stone Tips
of 9: Sigil stones are special magic items that can be used once to enchant a weapon or a piece of armor, clothing, or jewelry. You get one every time you close an Oblivion gate (see the General Oblivion Tips).
of 9: You don't have to be a member of the Mages Guild or have access to their enchanting center. Just use a sigil stone from inventory (in the "stones" section) and choose which unenchanted item you want to use it on and what to name it.
of 9: There are many different kinds of sigil stones, and which one you get when you grab one from a sigil citadel depends both on your level and on random chance.
of 9: The effects that a sigil stone can put on a weapon or clothing item are randomly chosen from a list of 30 possibilities when you grab the stone. How powerful the chosen effects are depends on your character's level.
of 9: For instance, let's say you grab a sigil stone while your character is level 4, and you luck into getting a stone that has Soul Trap and Resist Magic effects on it. Since you're only level 4, a soul-trapping weapon you make out of it will only have a 5-second duration on it. But if you'd been level 10 instead, you'd have gotten a stone that could put a 10-second Soul Trap effect on a weapon.
of 9: To get the best sigil stones, get your character up to level 17 or higher. This is good to do as soon as you can since many of the best sigil stones give enchantments that are stronger than any you could ever make at an enchanting altar, even with a grand soul. See the list below for exactly what's available.
of 9: If you've looked over the above effect list and decided there's a particular one you want, then invade any Oblivion world and go up to the top of its sigil citadel's Sigillum Sanguis area.
of 9: Stand to where you can grab the sigil stone, then quicksave before you actually take it.
of 9: As soon as it's in your inventory, check it to see if it's the one you want. If not, quickrestore and try again. (It can take awhile since there are 30 different effect sets.)
