The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

Declassifying Quest Items

  • To avoid the extremely common Morrowind problem of players losing quest items before they needed them, Oblivion marks quest items so that once you get them, you can't sell or drop them until after the quest they're connected to is completed. However, not all quest items are "declassified" once the quest they're used for is over, and you're stuck with them forever unless you use the following information to turn them into non-essential items.

Use the console's setquestobject command to change the quest-item status of any item. Follow the command by the item's form number and either a 1 (to make it a quest item) or a 0 (to make it a non-quest item). For example, the Umbra sword's form number is 26B22. If you wanted to make it back into a quest item after finishing Clavicus Vile's quest so that it would be weightless again, you'd use the command setquestobject 26B22 1.

Below is a list of the quest items that stayed quest items forever when I played. To make an item droppable after its quest is over, use the command setquestobject <form#> 0 (filling in the form number from the list).

    Akaviri Orders -- 785E0
    Arrow of Extrication -- 22DB5
Boots of Springheel Jak -- 148D4
Chorrol Castle Private Area -- 242B2
    Echo Cave Key -- 1648F
    Falcar's Key -- 2E99F
Filled Colossal Black Soul Gem -- 7E9D
    Handwritten Note -- C7631
    High Fane Key -- 2AF06
    Imbel Family Crypt Key --152FF
Instructions: The Gray Cowl -- 14740
Plan for the Big Heist -- 22DB4
Ring of the Vipereye -- 1C4DA, 6B654, 6B655, 6B656, 6B657, 6B658  (it's a leveled item, so try the listed form numbers until you get the right one)
    Varulae's Crystal Ball -- 95A38

If you want to, you can also "classify" non-quest items as quest items in order to make them weightless and impossible to accidentally drop or sell. Just replace the 0 in the command with a 1. For instance, to make Azura's Star weightless and undroppable, use the command setquestobject 193 1. Remember that you can always declassify an item by using the same command with a 0 for the second parameter (as in setquestobject 193 0).
