The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
A Mage's Staff
of 17: Talk to Polus again after getting your apprentice robe and ask about "Tasks" and "Mage's Staff" to get this quest.
of 17: To get the wood for your very own staff, you have to go to the Wellspring Cave (location 35 on the Heartlands map) and talk to the mages who work there.
of 17: Enter the cave and move forward to find a hostile necromancer near the dead body of Zahrasha. It seems the cave has been infested by those undead-loving lunatics!
of 17: Click on Zahrasha's body to get a journal update, then move further into the cave.
of 17: You'll soon find a large room with a channel of water running through the center of it.
of 17: Take the passage in the SW corner of that room to reach a door that requires a key.
of 17: Past the door is the Waterfront island area, where you need to kill three more necromancers to get a journal entry saying you've killed them all (provided you got all the ones in the cave).
of 17: Click on Eletta's body to get another journal update, then look around for some wood for your staff.
of 17: There's wood all over the place, but what you need is the unfinished staff that's in the big stone chest in between two purplish fires.
of 17: Once you have it, fast-travel back to the Arcane University and talk to Polus about the necromancers to report what happened.
of 17: He'll send you to the Chironasium area (the one with the enchanting altars) in the south part of the university to speak to Delmar.
of 17: When you talk to Delmar about your staff, you'll be able to choose a spell for him to enchant your staff with so that you can use the staff to cast the spell.
of 17: There are several different choices, and you can choose whichever one suits you the most.
of 17: Level 15 and above characters will get the strongest enchantment, so you'll probably want to wait until you're level 15 to order your staff with Delmar.
of 17: I personally recommend you get a paralysis staff, since a Paralyze 8 sec. spell can be very useful. Cast it on a powerful foe, then switch to a hard-hitting magic weapon and beat on him while he's helpless.
of 17: Wait until after the next midnight, then talk to Delmar about your staff to learn that it's finished and in a nearby cupboard.
of 17: Take the staff from the cupboard, plus all the useful magic scrolls. Now you're a *real* mage!
