The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints
Once I have the weapon and Azura's Star, how does the gimmick work?
of 8: Knock an enemy's health down with a powerful magic weapon, then hit him with the Soul Trap weapon so that he dies under the effect of the Soul Trap spell.
of 8: If your soul-trapping weapon's enchantment is for only 1 second or so, you'll have to make sure to strike the killing blow with the soul-trapping weapon.
of 8: That's why the Umbra sword is so useful if you can get it -- its Soul Trap spell lasts 120 seconds, so you can start attacking a creature with it, then switch to some other weapon (or just keep using Umbra since it's a very powerful sword).
of 8: Right after the enemy's soul is trapped, use it to recharge something. (And remember that every once in a while, your soul-trapping weapon itself will need recharging.)
of 8: Having Azura's Star ensures that you'll always have a soul gem available for use (as long as you keep it emptied out).
of 8: This soul-trap-and-recharge-immediately routine works really well once you have Goldbrand, the Ebony Blade, and other powerful artifact weapons. You can keep using those powerful weapons all the time since you're keeping them recharged.
of 8: However, you'll often be in areas that don't have enough soul-trappable creatures in them, so it's a good idea to have a spell that you can cast to summon a creature that you can easily soul-trap.
of 8: A good side effect of this whole process is that you'll probably never need to use Varla stones again, and can sell all the ones that you find. (Though you might want to keep a few for when you have a lot of weapons to recharge at once, especially if some of them have very large max charge values.)
