The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Hints

A Brush with Death

  • 1 of 17: You can learn from the rumor mill that the great painter Rythe Lythandas has gone missing, and his wife is distraught.
  • 2 of 17: You'll find her in Rythe's house near the SW corner of town.
  • 3 of 17: Ask her about Rythe to learn that he disappeared while working inside his locked art studio.
  • 4 of 17: She'll give you the key to the studio when you agree to help find Rythe.
  • 5 of 17: The key allows you to open the nearby locked door, so go through it and look around the studio for clues.
  • 6 of 17: Carefully examine all the paintings.
  • 7 of 17: One of them registers as an exit named "Unusual Painting to The Painted World." Sounds freaky, so try it!
  • 8 of 17: You'll end up in an odd-looking painted world with the missing Rythe Lythandas right nearby.
  • 9 of 17: Talk to him to learn that a thief stole his magical Brush of Truepaint, but was then killed by the painted trolls that he foolishly created with the brush.
  • 10 of 17: Now it's up to you to find the thief's body and get the magic brush back so you and Rythe can escape the painted world.
  • 11 of 17: Following the green quest arrow on your compass, head south and kill any painted trolls you come across.
  • 12 of 17: TIP: Use the turpentine poison that Rythe gave you on your weapons to help you kill the trolls quickly.
  • 13 of 17: You'll soon come to the dead Bosmer thief who has the Brush of Truepaint, so search his body to get it.
  • 14 of 17: Then head straight back to Rythe and talk to him to hand over the paint brush.
  • 15 of 17: TIP: First, search around the painted forest for the rest of the trolls (six total) and use the turpentine to kill them for their rare painted troll fat. It's different from regular troll fat, and has four beneficial effects on it (Fortify Magicka, Restore Health, Fortify Health, Restore Magicka).
  • 16 of 17: Wait for Rythe to paint an exit, then use it after getting a journal entry.
  • 17 of 17: After Rythe comes through, talk to him to get your reward of the Apron of Adroitness.
