What does Bismuth want at the statue?

  • 1 of 17: There are some clues around here.
  • 2 of 17: Look at the display on the far end of the museum, just next to where Bismuth is standing.
  • 3 of 17: He wants a clean start.
  • 4 of 17: Experiment with the device in the same room as Bismuth.  This is the way you can give him a clean start.
  • 5 of 17: You can press the yellow button to make the device display a few pre-formed shapes, and you can press the green button to give Bismuth your results.
  • 6 of 17: Notice what happens when you move one piece on the device on top of another.
  • 7 of 17: The intersection of two black pieces is white.
  • 8 of 17: Remember he wants a clean start.
  • 9 of 17: So you want to print a blank piece of paper for him.  Trial and error should eventually give you the solution, but if you want an eact solution, read ahead.
  • 10 of 17: I recommend starting from the square -- none of the pieces are overlapping in this configuration.
  • 11 of 17: Notice that pairs of triangles make little squares.
  • 12 of 17: And you can put the squares made by triangles on top of each other -- everything cancels out.
  • 13 of 17: Now, notice that there are two pieces that are oddly shaped -- one is a rectangle that only takes up one and a half of squares (of the same size that two triangles make), and one is a vertical rectangle that has a bit taken out of it.
  • 14 of 17: Put these two pieces together.
  • 15 of 17: Put the left end of the short rectangle on top of the bottom-right of the vertical rectangle with the missing corner, so you get two squares that touch on a corner.
  • 16 of 17: Next, drag the vertical rectange on top of this configuration, so its upper-left corner is on top of the upper-left corner of the top square.  This should give you a horizontal rectangle.
  • 17 of 17: Finally, move the single rectangle on top of the combination of pieces that you've just made (the one that looks like a horizontal rectangle).  This should give you a blank grid that you can now print for Bismuth.
