Odyssey: The Search for Ulysses Hints
How do I kill the gorgon?
of 10: If you really feel like it, you might be able to approach her safely and just kill her with your sword. I don't recommend this solution, though.
of 10: The shield that Athena gave you was meant to protect you, but not quite in the way you think -- you can still be killed/turned to stone just holding the shield. In fact, even if you do things just right, you may still have a bit of bad luck and get killed. You may want to try this puzzle a few times before reading on to the next hint. However, save your game before trying the first time.
of 10: You actually need to use the shield as a bit of a distraction.
of 10: Try putting it down somewhere.
of 10: In particular, walk up to one of the stone pillars and use the shield there. If Heriseus just raises his shield, then you're not quite in the right spot, so move around a bit and try again. You also might try different pillars -- I had more luck with one a little farther from the entrance.
of 10: Now, see if you can attract the gorgon.
of 10: Swing your sword at the shield, while staying under the cover of the pillar as much as you can. The gorgon should hear you and then shoot out a paralyzing bolt at you.
of 10: But if your shield is on the ground, the bolt will hopefully hit the shield and then reflect back to the gorgon.
of 10: The gorgon won't be turned to stone, but she will be stunned for a little while.
of 10: If she's close enough, you can take the opportunity to come out of hiding and use your sword to kill her. If she's not close enough, don't risk leaving your hiding spot -- just try again a little bit later as the gorgon gets closer.
