What about Evolution?

  • Difficult! Some Pokemon only evolve by being happy enough, generally the "baby" Pokemon. But there still are the three old methods: experience, trading, and stones.

    Some Pokemon require a certain item on them to evolve while trading. These are the Pokemon that either evolve from number 1-151 to number 152-251, or that are already part of the new Pokemon, but that require trading to be evolved. Evolution by experience hasn't changed, but there is a big problem with evolving -- stones.

    There is only one of each of the old stones (Leaf, Fire, Water, Thunder), but there is also a new stone. You get the Sun Stone by winning the park contest, but this can be done several times. The Moon Stone can also be gotten several times, for example by Mom finding it in the stores and buying it. The 4 other stones require that you to show certain Pokemon to the old man (Bill's Grandpa) at Bill's old house near Cerulean City. As I said, only one of each of those stones.

    However, by trading Pokemon from Red/Blue/Yellow, or by using Mystery Gift with another Game Boy Color, you may be able to get more stones. In Crystal, you can get phone numbers of some of the people who offer you items when they find them. It is also possible to get stones by capturing certain wild Pokemon. For example, a Clefairy may be holding a Moon Stone.

    An interesting side note, however, is that there are only two Pokemon that you'll have to get Stones for, Gloom to Bellossom and Sunkern to Sunflora, and both need Sun Stones. All the others can be traded from Red/Blue/Yellow.
