How to speed up
Find the Bike Shop in Goldenrod (you'll have to go around some buildings to get there). Talk to the owner who'll give you a bike if you'll promote the store for him. This is done by using the bike. After using it for a while, he will call you, thank you for your efforts, and tell you to keep the bike.
The Bike will double the speed at which you move, and cannot generally be used while indoors. You can only use it in a few houses (those you have to pass through to leave a town).
