There's an enemy in my way on the beam!
1 of 6: Fighting on a beam isn't the same as normal. It's completely two-dimensional.
2 of 6: If you're hit while on a beam, you'll lose your balance and fall off, grabbing the side. If you're hit while holding on to the side, you'll fall from the beam to certain death. Likewise, if you attack an enemy on a beam, he/she/it will also fall.
3 of 6: There are several ways to take care of an enemy on a beam:
4 of 6: 1) Before you get on the beam, throw a secondary weapon at the enemy. It'll fall and you can cross unchallenged.
5 of 6: 2) Stand on the beam and wait. When the enemy attacks, press the Jump button to dodge its attack, then hit the Attack button to counterattack. The enemy should fall. Cross the beam and continue on.
6 of 6: 3) Stand on the beam and wait. Predict when the enemy attacks so that you can hit it as it comes close.
