The Orange Box: Portal Hints

How can I get up to where the cube is?

  • 1 of 16: Notice that there's a button post in that room.
  • 2 of 16: Try the button out to see what it does.
  • 3 of 16: Ah, it works that extendable wall section across the room that angles upward!
  • 4 of 16: That and the two small concrete walls in the button room make it painfully obvious how you're supposed to get to the cube room.
  • 5 of 16: You're apparently supposed to put a blue portal on a nearby wall, then fire an orange portal at the slanted wall section once it's fully extended. (Remember that portals will disappear from a moving surface.)
  • 6 of 16: Then you'd go through the blue portal, ready to fire another blue portal at the floor below you after you exit the orange portal.
  • 7 of 16: However, if you do that, the best you can hope for is to be thrown down into the toxic crap on the room's lower floor.
  • 8 of 16: So instead, fire an orange portal onto the wall just to the right of the extendable wall segment, then use a nearby blue portal to get back over there.
  • 9 of 16: Do this right after pressing the button so that you can crouch-walk back past the extended wall segment and into the room adjacent to the big button ledge.
  • 10 of 16: That sounds like a waste of time since you didn't get there with the cube, but it's necessary in order to get things to where the jump to the cube area is doable.
  • 11 of 16: When you're ready, press the button to extend the wall segment again so you can get back into the room past it.
  • 12 of 16: As soon as it fully extends, go around to the front of it and fire an orange portal onto it.
  • 13 of 16: Then turn left (assuming you're facing the wall segment) and run over to the edge of the floor you're on.
  • 14 of 16: Looking down, you'll see a concrete floor section a ways below you.
  • 15 of 16: What you need to do is fire a blue portal down there and then drop into it before the extended wall segment starts retracting.
  • 16 of 16: If you do it right, you'll be thrown all the way across the room and into the cube's little area.
