Quake 4 Hints

How do I get this door unlocked?

  • 1 of 12: Go up the stairs to the left and find an interactive panel.
  • 2 of 12: With this panel, unlocking the door isn't as simple as clicking on a large, well-labeled button.
  • 3 of 12: Notice the shape in the center of the panel that looks like the letter "L."
  • 4 of 12: Are there any objects around here that kind of look like that letter?
  • 5 of 12: How about those data nodes (or information routers, as Strauss calls them) that are carrying the red beam of data along? Some of them are straight, and some are L-shaped.
  • 6 of 12: Look at the red data line in your room. It goes straight up and ends at the ceiling.
  • 7 of 12: That's because it's hitting the back of a misaligned L-shaped data node and not going anywhere.
  • 8 of 12: The purpose of L-shaped data nodes is to send the red beam off at an angle perpendicular to the one it comes in on, much like 90-degree elbow connectors used in pipelines. (Ever played the old card game Waterworks?)
  • 9 of 12: Here, you need the beam to come up from the floor (which it already is) and then head left to the node that's just above the locked door you need to open.
  • 10 of 12: So use the two clickable arrow-shaped buttons on either side of the "L" on the panel to rotate the data node into position.
  • 11 of 12: Pick either one of the buttons and press it twice to get the job done.
  • 12 of 12: NOTE: Yeah, I know -- that was a *whole* lot of explanation for something that only took two simple clicks. But you're going to be doing a lot more node-adjusting in another area soon, and it's good to already be familiar with the concept of turning L-shaped nodes to reroute the data stream.
